Surface Prep Treated as the Project
Real deck refinishing spends the majority of project time on surface prep, not application. Decks not properly cleaned, sanded, and dried produce stain that doesn't bond, peels within months, or shows tannin bleed-through. Prep includes cleaning with appropriate products (oxalic acid for tannin and rust stains, sodium percarbonate for general dirt, mildew cleaner for biological growth), sanding to bare wood when refinishing previously stained surfaces, and 24 to 48 hour dry time before application.
